Mountain Biking in Nepal

Mountain Biking in Nepal

Mountain Biking

Nepal offers attractive trails for mountain biking. You can mountain bike almost all tourism sites and sounds of Kathmandu and its surrounding destinations. You can bike to temples, monasteries, scenic sites and rural villages to explore the people’s way of life.

The outskirts of Kathmandu city such as Bhaktapur and Changu Narayan temple, Budhanilkantha and Nage Gompa, Sankhu and the valley rim hills of Nagarkot, Dhulikhel, Kakani and Godavari are great places to mountain bike.

Longer mountain bike trips from Kathmandu or neighboring destinations are Dhulikhel to Kodari (Nepal-Tibetan border); Naubise to Chitwan National Park via Palung Valley, Daman, and through the industrial town of Hetauda in the terai plains. Naubise to Hetauda is the old highway almost deserted with the opening of Kathmandu-Mugling highway and has fewer vehicle traffic and great scenery of rural Nepal including some of the greatest Himalayan views. Daman is the greatest Himalayan viewpoint close to Kathmandu with a viewing tower equipped with telescope for viewing mountains such as Everest and other great peaks.

Pokhara valley, the courtyard of the Annapurna massif, offers many scenic trails to mountain bike enthusiasts. You can mountain bike all of Pokhara including the Phewa Lake area, Sarangkot, Naudanda, Kanre, and Dhampus for excellent mountain views and the valley scenery. You can also mountain bike to Begnas and Rupa lake area in the southeast for scenic trip outings.

Exciting and adventurous off the road mountain bike trip to Kathmandu begins in Pokhara.
You will ride along the Kathmandu-Pokhara highway (200KM) for some 30 miles. Then you will ride the rural trails that locals have used as footpaths for centuries. These are wide footpaths, and occasionally jeep trails. There are however some single trails that you have to negotiate including some uphill and downhill. You will pass through villages and towns not frequented by tourists. Nonetheless, you will cross through the old trails to Annapurna Circle trek and Gorkha town, the seat of the Shah Dynasty. On this trip, you can see the true rural Nepal and stunning scenic beauty of the valleys and the snowcapped peaks. If you are an avid mountain biker, we would highly recommend you this trip.

Another scenic mountain bike route is Kathmandu to Dhulikhel and to Charikot and Jiri in the east. Part of the trip goes on the busy highway to Nepal-Tibet border; however, you can avoid the main highway roads by going through villages and farm trails. The best way to mountain bike this area or anywhere on Nepal’s highways is with a support vehicle to avoid steep uphill and windy narrow roads where you cannot see the oncoming vehicle nor the another driver sees you. Employing experienced guide on each route is suggested to avoid accidents. The above are some of the already popular destinations for enthusiastic mountain bikers. However, there are numerous other destinations yet to open for mountain biking routes.

Best Season for Mountain Biking in Nepal is October to May.

We can also arrange mountain biking trips in the neighboring countries particularly Tibet between May to September.
